Thirty years on the dock and the number that still decides whether I sleep at night is not top speed. It is on-time, to the pallet, every time — and those are two different disciplines. Speed gets you the headline. Precision gets you the renewal. A customer will forgive a fast carrier a late load once. They will not forgive a precise one, ever, because they stopped watching for it.
I put this on a short film because it's the lesson I hand every junior planner and every new driver on their first induction, and I keep coming back to it myself. The town's engineers build calculators for cost and payback and load. Fine. But the thing I actually stand beside on the dock is the arithmetic of buffer — and almost nobody prices that into their model.
The worked example
Run a small route: 14 stops, a driver guaranteed an 0800 dock-window. Run it "lean" on a promised 90-minute loop, zero slack. The first delay — a gate hold, a slammed door, a street blocked by a wreck — propagates through every stop behind it. One late arrival at stop 7 turns the whole loop late, and the promised clock is gone.
Now run the same route with a guaranteed 12-minute buffer built into the plan. The pinch that would have blown the day gets absorbed inside the loop. The driver arrives on the hour, the load sheet balances, and — here's the kicker — because the buffer is the plan, you can measure it. You learn exactly where your trustworthy minutes live.

Notice what the buffered route did not do: it did not slow down. It spread the schedule out so the irregularities of a real street stop being emergencies. A planner who reads "112 minutes vs 90" as "slower" is reading the wrong number. The 90-minute promise was fiction on day one. The 112-minute plan is true every day, and customers rebook on the true one.
